    OVERVIEW: Provides a wide range of health, addiction, and preventative services to Somerset County residents.

    1) REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH: Offers a variety of reproductive health services to teens, women of childbearing age and men. Provides pregnancy testing, birth control, counseling, contraceptive supplies, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases. Call for an appointment. Some services are available daily; others by appointment only.

    2) COMMUNICABLE DISEASES: Offers public awareness, education, surveillance, and control measures to stop the spread of infectious diseases.

    3) ANIMAL RABIES CONTROL: Offer clinics at several locations during the spring and fall to provide for the economical vaccination of dogs, cats, and ferrets. There is a fee of $8 per vaccination. All animal bites or suspected rabies exposure cases must be reported 24/7 to SCHD Environmental staff. For cases occurring after hours medical providers notify 911 and calls are referred o the SCHD Environmental on-call staff. SCHD Environmental staff work in conjunction with CD nurses on suspected human exposure to rabies.

    4) COLORECTAL CANCER: Offers screening for early detection and treatment. Individuals must be between the ages of 50-64, have no health insurance, or are underinsured for screening of colorectal cancer. Recipients must be a resident of Somerset County.

    5) IMMUNIZATIONS FOR ADULTS & CHILDREN: Offers influenza vaccines during the flu season clinics. Adult vaccines are: hepatitis A&B, rabies pre-exposure, shingles, MMR, meningoccal, and pneumoccal. Childhood immunizations require an appointment once the parent has provided all immunization record documentation. Records should include a compilation from all primary care providers, previous health department records, and/or school records. Parents must reach out to the health department or the primary care provider to make sure that their child's immunizations are up-to-date. 

    6) SEASONAL FLU CLINICS 2020: Free drive thru adult clinic at the health department on 10/13 & 10/27 from 9AM-12Noon, and 10/20 from 1PM-4PM. This year flu vaccines are at no cost to the public. Dates for children: 10/14, 4:30-6pm at Woodson Elementary, 10/21, 4:30-6pm at Greenwood Elementary, 10/28, 4:30-6pm at Deal Island Elementary, and 11/4, 3:30-5pm at Somerset Intermediate. Registration for an appointment is required. Go to Face masks are required.

    7) REFUGEE HEALTH: Provides a comprehensive health assessment, screenings, and follow-up care to: federally determined, state referred refugees, asylees, parolees, and other immigrants.

    8) AERS (ADULT EVALUATION & REVIEW): Offers assistance to the aged and functionally disabled adults, who are at risk of being institutionalized. Staff provides comprehensive evaluation to identify services available to help individuals to remain in the community. For more information call 443-523-1700.

    9) HEALTH INSURANCE/MEDICAID: Offers assistance to customers with the online insurance application via Maryland Health Connection. Assists customers through the application process; answers questions, refers for assistance with Qualified Health Plans. Helps Medicaid recipients navigate the health care system in order to access needed health related services.

    10) VITAL RECORDS (BIRTH & DEATH CERTIFICATES): Can be obtained at the Health Dpt. for a fee of $25 for copy of birth certificate, and $25 for the 1st copy of death certificate and $20 for every subsequent copy. By appointment only. Call for more information 410-523-1700.

    11) PLANNIING & PREVENTION: Provides an array of services such as the: Adolescent Health and Abstinence Education Program, Childhood Obesity Program, Tobacco Education and Cessation Program, Diabetes Prevention, Substance Use and Opioid Misuse Prevention, and Access to Harm Reduction Program.

    12) HEALTH PROMOTION/OUTREACH: Provides medical information to the public on health related topics in an effort to better educate individuals with needed knowledge to make adequate medical decisions for themselves and their loved ones. Outreach efforts include participation in health fairs, neighborhood events and community gatherings.

    13) ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH, FOOD, & WATER SAFETY: Inspects and licenses restaurants, food processing plants, trailer parks, foster homes, and public swimming pools. Issues permits for residential wells and sewage systems. Monitors air and water quality in compliance with state standards. Sponsors rabies control program. Call 443-523-1700.
